Ancient only in the sense that it was born from an obsession with mythology, this album is timeless in it’s irony. In a decade that worshiped the primal and natural state of the past, it’s sense of mysticism, this was the embodiment of the black plague. Perhaps the first goth rock band, along with the stooges and vu, king crimson reveled in the humour of the depraved, the insane, the id and generaly dark subject matter. It was uncanny and unheard of outside of the blues and folk communities that someone write music that wasn’t centered on peace and love. The albums cover art carries it’s theme. Sorrow. Cover up the mouth of the face on the cover and look into it’s eyes, you’ll see eyes sad beyond our physical capability of expression. In the Court of the Crimson King is an astonishing revelation for it’s time. Hippies beware.
